UN fears crimes against humanity in Syria
About this category: Human Rights

-- UN officials have said Syrian security forces may have committed crimes against humanity in their crackdown on protesters, as at least eight more civilians were killed in massive protests against President Bashar Al-Assad's rule.

The UN concerns were expressed in a statement late Friday by Francis Deng, special adviser to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the prevention of genocide, and Edward Luck, the special adviser on the responsibility to protect.

"Based on available information, the special advisers consider that the scale and gravity of the violations indicate a serious possibility that crimes against humanity may have been committed and continue to be committed in Syria," the joint statement said.

The two called for an "independent, thorough, and objective investigation" of the events in Syria.

They echoed calls by Ban to the Syrian government to allow humanitarian access to areas affected by the unrest and to facilitate the visit of the UN Human Rights Council-mandated fact-finding mission to the country.

"Without these steps, it will be very difficult to defuse existing tensions and to prevent the escalation of violence," they said.

"All actors involved in the current crisis in Syria are urged to refrain from the use of force, from acts of violence, or from incitement to violence."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 1,483 civilians have been killed in four months of protests, and thousands more have been arrested.

France and Britain also denounced the deadly crackdown on protesters, particularly in the country's third city Homs.

Paris condemned the Homs clampdown, with the foreign ministry spokesman saying on Friday that the army should protect the people rather than "sow terror."

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was "appalled" by the killings of civilians and the "brutal violence in Homs", saying the people have been calling for change and Assad "must listen to them."

More than 50 people have been killed since in central Homs in the past week, activists have said, accusing the regime of sowing sectarian strife among the city's Christian, Sunni Muslim and Assad's Alawite minority community.

Activists had called for Friday's demonstrations on Facebook group The Syrian Revolution 2011, a driving force behind the anti-regime protests, to show support for the flash-point city.

The Internet group also called for a general strike on Saturday.

More than 1.2 million Syrians demonstrated in the eastern oil hub of Deir Ezzor and Hama in the north, the head of the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP in Nicosia.

"More than 1.2 million people marched: in Deir Ezzor there were more than 550,000, and in Hama more than 650,000," he said.

In Homs, more than 25,000 people gathered in Al-Ulu park in the mostly Sunni Muslim Al-Khalidiyeh neighborhood, the Observatory said.

Security forces used violence to disperse demonstrators with deaths reported in Homs, in Syria's second city Aleppo, in Idlib near the Turkish border and around Damascus, activists said.

Rights activists said two protesters were killed Friday in Homs, three in Aleppo, another in Kfar Ruma, in Idlib province, and two in the Mleiha region of greater Damascus.

Homs has spearheaded dissent against the Assad regime since pro-democracy protests erupted on March 15. Fridays -- the weekly day of rest and key Muslim prayers -- have been a day of major demonstrations.

The army had entered Homs in May to suppress calls for the fall of the regime, and swept through the city this week, arresting "armed men" and confiscating "stockpiles of weapons," according to a pro-government daily.

Syrian television denied that more than a million people had come out to protest, saying that only "about 2,000 people took part in Friday's demonstration in Deir Ezzor."

The reports of numbers could not be independently verified.

The government blames "armed terrorist group" of attempting to sow terror in the country, and state news agency Sana said a train driver was killed and several passengers hurt when their train derailed on Saturday morning after the track was sabotaged.

UN: Marked increase in forced displacement of Palestinians

The UN Office for theCoordination of Humanitarian Affairs released a report Thursday documenting alarming trends in the forced displacement of Palestinians in Area C.

The OCHA report found that more demolitions have taken place so far in 2011 than in all of 2009 and 2010 combined.

The Khan Al-Ahmar village near Jerusalem received four stop work orders last week, the report said, and there are ongoing demolition orders against another two hundred and fifty structures in surrounding communities.

Around twenty Bedouin communities with a population of 2,353 people live in the Jerusalem periphery with over 80 percent of them at risk of displacement due to the expansion of the Maale Adumin settlement and the separation wall.

The report, based on field visits to thirteen communities in Area C, found that in most cases Palestinian families are being forced to leave due to "restrictive policies and practices of the Israeli authorities, including movement and access restrictions, settlement activity and restrictions on Palestinian construction."

Thousands are at risk of displacement, the report added.

Three hundred and forty two Palestinian owned structures were demolished by Israel in the first half of 2011 and 656 people, including 351 children, lost their homes in the first half of 2011, almost five times more than within the same period last year.

There are also over 3,000 demolition orders outstanding, including 18 targeting schools.

Over 60 percent of the West Bank is considered Area C where Israel retains control over security, planning and zoning.

Around 300,000 settlers live in Area C.

Israel has occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip since 1967.

Share the journey of Colorss | Lets walk together

It's been quite sometime I have not shared the developments of Colorss. First of all I am really thankful to everyone without whom we could not reach here at this stage. Still remember the day when we started 2 years nine months ago we had only ONE child and today we realize that we have grown up.. at a speed, with progress, with dedication, with your support and trust. Yes, not to mentioned those countless hurdles, difficulties and moments that gave us sleepless nights.

Today we are present at four schools and two cities in two states:

  1. Mahadji Shinde High School, Pune Municipality School at Pune Cantonment Board
  2. Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School, Pune Municipality School at Pune Cantonment Board
  3. Guru Rabindranath Tagore School, Pune Municipality School, Pune
  4. Navprerna - a care club of Navrachana School, Baroda, Gujarat (Navrachana is an independent, co-educational, English medium school. It is one of the premier schools of Gujarat. Each year it attracts the brightest students who wish to follow the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi (CBSE) curriculum.)

Projects:

Project Enhance :- Project Enhance uses sport and the arts as tools to promote physical well-being while improving mental health. Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder; rather, it is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
In India, even today girl child is considered as a liability and is often ignored; even harassed and molested. Project Enhance is targeted at empowering the girl child through a blend of martial arts and creative arts resulting into increased self-confidence and improved academic performance as a result.

Project 'Colors of Life' :- Project 'Colors of Life' provides an answer to one of our nation's most troubling problems. Although more children are staying in school than in previous years, there are still too many students dropping out, even at the very earliest levels. This problem is especially prevalent among the poor and the disabled. Some studies estimate that as many as 50% of children will drop out before finishing the higher secondary stage. More than half of all children leave school before ninth grade. To reduce these rates, we have to figure out why so many children aren't finishing their studies.

Project Urja - igniting the fire within :-Project Urja - igniting the fire within is our first vocational training program started in Baroda, Gujarat. The project aims at the empowerment of women. It aims at providing vocational training to women especially for women from underprivileged sections of the society. Project Urja is an initiative to make Colorss a self-sustained model.

Number of students:
Project Enhance :- 100 girls
Project 'Colors of Life' :- 65 children
Project Urja - igniting the fire within :- 15 women from slums under-going training
Holistic Programs for a child - specially for Guru Rabindranath Tagore School - 50 students

Today we have approximate 215 children and 15 women at Colorss. The numbers are fluctuating due to unstable family cohesiveness, poor financial condition of the family, child is asked to work and avoid school, broken-family, distance between the school and home and other factors.. We have our limitations as we are still very young and we need a lot of support to address these grass-root level problems.

Small steps leads to Big Change

Teacher Training Workshops | Pune

The Colorss Foundation recently conducted a series of teacher-training workshops in order to better understand the problems that teachers and the children they teach face in their daily lives. The workshops aimed to provide  teachers with a background in how to help students and parents get the best out of their education, as well as  provide support in how to handle the stress that sometimes comes with teaching.

The workshops divided participating teachers into groups of 6 or 7, where they were free to discuss some of the  frustrations and problems they encountered in their teaching careers. Many brought up issues with children not completing homework and not paying attention in class. Additionally, they felt that rowdy children disturbed the class as a whole, and many students who came from a background of abuse and violence brought such behaviors with them into the classroom. Furthermore, teachers agreed that there was a general attitude of pride in misbehaving and disrespect and ingratitude towards the teacher and the teaching facilities.

The groups then discussed possible solutions to these problems. They suggested that there should be more discipline in classes, and that their students should be taught the value of a free education. The teachers also agreed that training teachers in how to control difficult children and in how to better motivate children in class would be helpful.

The general reception of the workshop was mixed – some teachers were pessimistic and reluctant to learn new teaching methods, while some were eager to welcome new ideas.

Israel detains Palestinian lawmaker

-- Israeli forces on Tuesday detained 11 Palestinians in the West Bank including a Hamas-affiliated member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and a journalist.

MP Nasser Abdel Jawwad was arrested in the early hours in the village of Deir Ballut near Salfit, a town nine miles south of Nablus, after troops ransacked his home, Hamas officials said.

"Abduction of lawmakers is continuation of a plan to assassinate the Palestinian people," a statement released by Hamas’ legislators read.

Officials in Nablus told Ma'an that troops detained journalist Nawwaf Al-Amir, 37, from his home in Kafr Qallil. Al-Amir is program coordinator at Hamas-affiliated Al-Quds satellite TV station.

In Rafidia, west of Nablus, soldiers detained Hamas member Fuad Al-Khafash, the director of the Ahrar center and former director of the bureau of former Minister of Prisoners Affairs Wasfi Qabahi, who was detained a few weeks earlier.

Officials added that soldiers arrested a Hamas supporter called Firas Jarrar from his home in Nablus.

The army had no immediate comment on the lawmaker's arrest, but an Israeli military spokeswoman said 11 Palestinians were detained across the West Bank overnight.

The arrest of the MP from Salfit brings to 14 the number of Hamas parliamentarians detained by Israeli troops over the past eight months.

It also raises to seven the number of Hamas MPs detained by the army since the Islamist movement signed a surprise reconciliation deal with its Fatah rivals at the end of April, a move which was roundly condemned by Israel.

Most of the Hamas MPs who have been picked up were among 64 of the group's members who were arrested during a major army sweep in summer 2006 after militants in Gaza snatched Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Shalit, now 24, is still being held in Gaza and attempts to broker a prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Hamas have led nowhere.

New Sessions starts from June 2011

June 2011 new session, new school; Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School, Pune Cantonment Board is our new school where we would be starting our both the projects. Special focus would be on self-defense for the girls.

This makes our reach in two schools in Pune Cantonment Board. Both these schools are municipality marathi medium schools. Mahadji Shinde High School where we already have the projects will see new admissions and quite possible couple of new additions to the existing curriculums. June 2011 is going to be very exciting; this season we are ADDING dance therapy, teacher-training, psychological testing for the teachers and students, video tutorials, computer-games for brain stimulations and more advanced martial art trainings for our children.

The new sessions will have new additions from Mahadji Shinde High School and of course two new batch from Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School our new school; both schools located in Pune Cantonment Board, Pune. Apart from this we are working with one scholarship municipality school on holistic development of the child. We are having an estimate that the children in projects would shoot up to 200.

Projects

'Colors of Life' provides an answer to one of our nation's most troubling problems.

Although more children are staying in school than in previous years, there are still too many students dropping out, even at the very earliest levels. This problem is especially prevalent among the poor and the disabled. Some studies estimate that as many as 70% of children will drop out before finishing the higher secondary stage. More than half of all children leave school before ninth grade. To reduce these rates, we have to figure out why so many children aren't finishing their studies.

For the most part, children drop out, or are taken out of school by their parents, because they think that school is irrelevant. Many families see school as a bad investment — they'd rather have their children earning money or caring for younger siblings. But by leaving school early, children often fail to realize their full potential; innate skills and abilities are lost by neglect or by failure to explore and foster talents and interests.

If children and their families could see how education will bring much greater economic benefit than might otherwise be gained in the short term, without proper schooling, they would almost invariably prefer to complete their studies.

Objectives:

  • Motivating children to pursue further education
  • Reducing the number of school dropouts
  • Empowering children, developing pride and responsibility in work
  • Enhancing leadership quality
  • Comment from our student from Colors of Life:

30 students are part of this project. New students will join from the same school i.e Mahadji Shinde High School in the new sessions. Further more a new batch will start in Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School.

Comment from our student in Colors of Life project:

'On joining 'Colors of Life' I came to know other side of myself. 'Colors of Life' is an institution which develops confidence in children. While working with this program I had many questions. But now I could solve them through this foundation. I was surprised to see the development in me which I could not do previously. Now I feel confident that I can do anything with interest. I developed interest in studies. These difficult subjects now I feel easy. I feel happy to know the difference in myself.' -Akash Sakat- 9th Class

Project Enhance uses sport and the arts as tools to promote physical well-being while improving mental health.

Objectives:

  • To empower girl child
  • Develop discipline to achieve mutual respect and understanding
  • Develop trust ,confidence, cooperation and togetherness
  • Increase attention span

46 girls are part of this project. New girl students will join from the same school i.e Mahadji Shinde High School in the new sessions. Further more a new batch will start in Dr. Ambedkar Memorial School.

Comment from our girl student who is under Project Enhance:

'I am feeling very peaceful on joining karate project. Even our teacher is also very cool person. Karate benefits us and also gives physical exercise. Karate also develops our memory power. It gives physical flexibility to our body. There are many benefits of karate.' -Nikita Mane - 6th Class

Urja-igniting the fire within our vocational training, the participants would under-go training and a psychological test. These women would under-go training for handicraft and imitation jewelry, after the long procedure of identification of these women, doing a detailed survey of their family and their problems, needs assessments were carried out to identify their strength and weakness. Few presentations were given to students of Navrachana School, Baroda on community development and how they can get involved in this project.

We had a great time with interns coming from different colleges who worked and are working with us. Right from Engineering to Management sector; Interns were/are from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Tata Institute of Social Science, S.P Jain Institute of Management and Research, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Department of Home Science, M.S. University, Loyola College, VIT and many more...

The launch of 2nd Edition of E-zine is due and we would launch it in 2nd week of June. New sessions from June 2011 seems to be super-hectic with most of the plans being laid. Our laptop crashed and we lost quite a lot of data; hence adding further unexpected delay in our on-going planning.  We need your support in the on-going process.  We need on-site people to support us in the on-going projcts, we need dedicated volunteers for different task, and we need sponsors for laptop (this being our immediate need), stationery, crayons, pen-pencil, drawing papers, registers, educational CD's and more..

Please get in touch with us and share this with your friends and family members. Drop us an email with any of your expression.  You can reach us at: contact@colorss.org

Thank you for giving and sharing your time for 'social-change'

Colorss Foundation and its projects in detail

Colorss Foundation is a registered trust in India working towards the well-being of underprivileged children by integrating arts and technology. Some of the programs conducted by Colorss are 'One of its kinds'. They help in making these children self-confident and esteemed individuals. Our volunteers come from different corners of the globe; they work with a single motto making Colorss a NGO which is true to its name and deeds. At Colorss we all have a common belief; small steps lead to big changes. Therefore the activities that we perform have a long lasting impression in an individual's life.

A presentation that talk's about its projects.. please have a look.

We need people from all walks of Life

When we see someone in pain, we feel the same pain somewhere deep in our heart. And suddenly a thought "I wish I could help?" and then the next moment we turn down that thought. We feel happy and satisfied by turning down our responsibility in the name of almighty, because he is the creator and redeemer of all.

But for a while, just change the characters, now you are the person in need and you see someone in his full capability to help others. What would be your thought? You need help, someone to help you through! While the wait, when you see no one turned up, then how would you feel? When it comes to service; giving is one of the most difficult tasks. Our motherland is known for the morals it carry. For the people who served others before themselves. It is the land of saints who renounced the world and served others.

At Colorss we are trying to fulfill some part of our responsibilities for others, for the world and most importantly for our conscience. We try to help the disadvantaged, beyond a matter of profit and loss. It is a symphony of love and care which creates the most beautiful music in the world. You could be its composer as well.. If you think you can help others, then you just have to step out and see your role. It might be smaller at first sight but remember drop by a drop an ocean is formed. And when would you see the world changing or being a source of someone's smile then you would be the happiest person of being a part of it.

Colorss is looking for some young legs to come forward and be geared up for some purpose. Your participation not only yields immediate practical benefits to yourself - such as building your own experience, skills, and connections - but you also have the gratification inherent in improving others' lives.

 Follow Us on: Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/colorssfoundation

Currently students from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and S.P Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai - have started their internships with 'Colorss'.

We need volunteers from all walks of life. Join our team for a new experience. All volunteers are required to send their resumes at 'emailcolorss@gmail.com' clearly stating their expertise and area of interest. Remember we need volunteers from all walks of life.

The project aims at the empowerment of women. It aims at providing vocational training to women especially for women from underprivileged sections of the society.

A team of 10 highly motivated youngsters headed by Ms Ahluwalia is working on Urja. Each member is involved in the development of this crucial and important project. The team successfully identified couple of communities as per the guidelines. Among them one community was finalized, it's a slum area located on Magal Pandey Road, Vadodara.. The person in charge of this community has agreed to extend his support for the implementation of the project.

We carried out a need assessment in the identified community in order to understand the background of these women, their socio-economic structure and their felt needs; those that are always ignored by the society.  Our intern Ms Papori from Tata Institute of Social Science and Ms Ahluwalia helped in designing the assessment.  The detailed analysis of the data-collection has helped us to understand the need and kind of program that needs to be implemented.

Colorss Baroda Team #Urja ; discussing plan of action for Urja :)

Ms Papori is helping us with the initial set-up for Urja. This of course is a challenging task for the entire team Colorss of Baroda. Setting up from the scratch, the team has been highly dedicated and coordinated properly. Soon the women in Urja programme would undergo skill training. We hope to have an exhibition of the products made so that the society at large can feel the change.

Once the training program starts and the samples are created. We would share them with you. Yes, we do look ahead to hear you and your support is always being honored.

Come let's be a part of change

For Love

Anand

Social Change has began | Children in our project speak out

Colors of Life and Project Enhance are the two projects that are being carried out in Pune city with Pune Municipal Schools located in Pune Cantonment Board. We had been mentioning in past about the developments of the projects and children. Their improvemnets and what we feel about it. However its more important to know what they(children) feel, what they want, their inner feelings and the words that come from their heart values. For their words are more important than what we feel because the change is happening within them and it can be felt when they speak..

Below are the feelings from our children in projects..

Comment from our girl student who is under Project Enhance;

'I am feeling very peaceful on joining karate project. Even our teacher is also very cool person. Karate benefits us and also gives physical exercise. Karate also develops our memory power. It gives physical flexibility to our body. There are many benefits of karate.' Nikita Mane - 6th Class

Comment from our student from Colors of Life ;

Do let us know what you feel about our on-going programs?

Keep following there's a lot more coming ahead...

Anand
